Proper psychometric (literally “mind measuring”) instruments are statistically and scientifically based and measure ability, aptitude, interests or personality. Instruments should be based on substantial research conducted on a wide range of people, to make objective comparisons between individuals or groups possible. Few have been comprehensively researched, so an understanding of the underlying theory and background is needed to choose the right instrument for the job and interpret the results fairly to the person being assessed. As a result, access to the tests requires the user to have the appropriate Certificate of Competence (Level A for ability and interest measures; Level B for personality instruments) awarded by the British Psychological Society whose professional guidelines we follow.
